The beloved studio behind Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro makes its most ambitious play for American audiences yet with this gentle, well-made adaptation of The Borrowers.
As the projectors warm up in U.S. theaters today, 1300 of them are being prepped to pass the latest animated release from Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli through their lenses. While that's fewer than half the number of screens that will host each of this week's other two wide releases (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and This Means War), it's a significant number: Disney, the company responsible for distributing Ghibli releases in the United States, has never opened one of the Studio Ghibli's films on nearly as many screens.

Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し, lit. "The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro") is a 2001 Japanese animated fantasy-adventure film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film tells the story of Chihiro Ogino, a sullen ten-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighborhood and after her parents are transformed into pigs by the witch Yubaba, becomes trapped in an alternate reality that is inhabited by spirits and monsters. Chihiro takes a job working in Yubaba's bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and escape back to the human world.

Satellite anime broadcaster Animax Broadcast Japan Inc. said it will air on Aug. 6 a collection of Hayao Miyazaki's early works produced in the 1970s and '80s.
The retrospective program is to celebrate the July 16 release of "Kokurikozaka Kara" (From Kokuriko Hill) by Studio Ghibli Inc., for which Miyazaki provided original story ideas and wrote the screenplay.
It is a feature film adaptation of the manga of the same title by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama. The story is set in Yokohama in 1963, as opposed to the original manga which is set in 1980. Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki, took the helm of the production.

Studio Ghibli Inc.'s "Karigurashi no Arrietty" (The Borrower Arrietty) animated feature film is due out on Blu-ray and DVD on June 17, Walt Disney Studios Japan said.
"Karigurashi no Arrietty" was based on British writer Mary Norton's children's book, "The Borrowers."
The anime, about a tiny girl who lives under the floorboards of an old house, was released in July 2010 to immediate success. Each version includes extra footage offering a glimpse into the anime's production.

It is Miyazaki's eighth film for Ghibli, and his tenth overall. The plot centers on a goldfish named Ponyo who befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sōsuke, and wants to become a human girl.
The film has won several awards, including the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year. It was released in Japan on July 19, 2008, August 14, 2009 in the US and Canada and February 12, 2010 in the UK. The film reached #9 in the U.S. box office charts for its opening weekend.

Director Hayao Miyazaki's "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" Blu-ray edition hit the market July 14 and immediately topped the July 26 Blu-ray ranking compiled by Oricon Inc.
Released by Walt Disney Co. (Japan) Ltd., the Blu-ray version sold 20,000 copies to grab the top spot in the weekly ranking for July 12 to 18. This is a phenomenal sales figure for a film first released 26 years ago, in 1984.

Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫, Mononoke-hime) is a 1997 Japanese animated historical fantasy feature film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli.
The film was first released in Japan on July 12, 1997, and in the United States on October 29, 1999, in select cities and on November 26, 1999, in Canada.
Princess Mononoke is a period drama set specifically in the late Muromachi period of Japan but with numerous fantastic elements, and concentrates on the struggle between the supernatural guardians of a forest and the humans who consume its resources as seen by the outsider Ashitaka.
"Mononoke" (物の怪) is not a name, but a general term in the Japanese language for a spirit or monster.

My Neighbour Totoro (となりのトトロ)

My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ, Tonari no Totoro), is a 1988 Japanese anime film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film follows the two young daughters of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan. The film won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award for Best Film in 1988.

The film was released on VHS and laserdisc in the United States by Tokuma Japan Communications' US subsidiary in 1993 with the title, My Friend Totoro.
