Anime & Manga Japan / Animax to air early works of Hayao Miyazaki on Aug. 6

Satellite anime broadcaster Animax Broadcast Japan Inc. said it will air on Aug. 6 a collection of Hayao Miyazaki's early works produced in the 1970s and '80s.
The retrospective program is to celebrate the July 16 release of "Kokurikozaka Kara" (From Kokuriko Hill) by Studio Ghibli Inc., for which Miyazaki provided original story ideas and wrote the screenplay.
It is a feature film adaptation of the manga of the same title by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama. The story is set in Yokohama in 1963, as opposed to the original manga which is set in 1980. Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki, took the helm of the production.

Set in an alternate future, the series focus on how the former prince Lelouch Lamperouge obtains a power known as Geass and decides to use it to destroy the Holy Britannian Empire, an imperial monarchy and a superpower that has been conquering various countries.

An exhibition in Osaka is giving visitors a chance to see real-life renderings of inventions and gadgets featured in the popular anime series Doraemon.
Among the displays in the event running through Aug. 31 at the Shin Umeda City district near JR Osaka Station is a single-seat helicopter, said to be one of the smallest in the world, inspired by Doraemon’s head-mounted ”Takecopter” flying kit, albeit not quite as small.

Mai Mai Miracle

Mai Mai Miracle (マイマイ新子と千年の魔法 Maimai Shinko to Sen-nen no Maho, lit. Mai Mai Shinko and the Millennium-Old Magic) is a Japanese animated film based on Nobuko Takagi's novelization of her autobiography, Maimai Shinko. It was produced by the animation studio Madhouse, distributed by Shochiku, and directed by Sunao Katabuchi.
The film debuted at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland on August 15, 2009. It was released in Japan on November 21,[5] and ultimately had a rare seven-month run at the cinemas.
The movie's plot is partially based on research on Sei Shōnagon's The Pillow Book.

E-book of latest 'Suzumiya Haruhi' due out July 21

"Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyogaku" (The dismay of Haruhi Suzumiya), the latest two-part volume of the best-selling light novel series, will be released as an e-book on July 21, Kadokawa Contents Gate Co. said.
It will be sold through the publisher's e-book distribution service, Book Walker, the company said.

Nana Mizuki's new single 'Junketsu Paradox' coming out on Aug. 3

Singer and voice actress Nana Mizuki's much-awaited new single, "Junketsu Paradox" (chastity paradox), will be released on Aug. 3, her record company, King Records Co., said.
The CD marks her 25th single and the song also serves as the ending theme for the "Blood-C" animated TV series, which is currently airing, the company said.
Priced at 1,200 yen ($15), including tax, the CD will come in a special case for its initial production run and include "7Colors" and "Stay Gold."

The restaurant, which is being remodeled from an existing restaurant in the “San Francisco” area of the park for this year’s “One Piece Premier Summer” event, opens from July 7 through September 4.

Yokohama offers "Kokurikozaka Kara" guided tours

YOKOHAMA--The Yokohama city government's Culture and Tourism Bureau and the Yokohama City Guide Association joined hands to launch guided tours from July 18 inspired by the animated film "Kokurikozaka Kara" (From Kokuriko Hill), officials said.
The latest movie from Studio Ghibli Inc., whose story is set in the port city, was released at theaters on July 16.
There are four guided tour programs that take participants to various city spots related to "Kokurikozaka Kara." The participants can experience the anime's world, the officials said.

For the Family Computer, two role-playing games named Saint Seiya: Ōgon Densetsu and Saint Seiya: Ōgon Densetsu Kanketsu-Hen, were released in 1987 and 1988, respectively. In 2003, Bandai released another role-playing game game called Saint Seiya: Ōgon Densetsu-Hen Perfect Edition for the WonderSwan Color, adapting the first 73 episodes. 'Big O' coming out in Blu-ray box set in December

The animated TV series "The Big O," whose two seasons aired on and off from 1999 to 2003, will be released as a Blu-ray box set on Dec. 22, the anime's official website recently announced.
Priced at 37,800 yen ($474), including tax, the box set will include all 26 episodes, the website said. It will also include a 24-page bonus booklet and special audio commentary.

The cloud-based storage service, available at $9.99 a month, enables fans to read digital versions of 62 items, including ”Astro Boy” and ”Phoenix,” of the author who died in 1989, as well as view motion pictures with Japanese voiceovers and English subtitles.

Aria (アリア) is a utopian science fantasy manga by Kozue Amano.
The series was originally titled Aqua (アクア) when it was published by Enix in the magazine Monthly Stencil, being retitled when it moved to Mag Garden's magazine Comic Blade. Aqua was serialized in Stencil from 2001 to 2002 and collected in two tankōbon volumes. Aria was serialized in Comic Blade from November 2002 to April 2008 and collected in twelve volumes. The series has been adapted as an anime television series, with a first season broadcast in 2005, a second season in 2006, an OVA released September 2007, and a third season in 2008 that ended around the same time as the manga serialization.
