Anime & Manga Japan Net / L.A. pop culture expo reveals star-studded guest list

Anime Expo, the largest fan convention dedicated to Japanese pop culture in North America, will feature "Fate/Zero" and "Wandering Son" anime series director Ei Aoki as a guest of honor.
The event, to be hosted by the Los Angeles Convention Center between June 29 and July 2, normally attracts around 100,000 visitors, offering fans a rare chance to interact with artists, creators, directors and voice actors.

Ah My Goddess Opening Theme (Open Your Mind)

Oh! My Goddess! (ああっ女神さま), or Ah! My Goddess! in some releases, is a Japanese seinen manga series written and illustrated by Kōsuke Fujishima. It premiered in the November 1988 issue of Afternoon where it is still being serialized. Every few months, the most recent chapters are published in tankōbon volumes by Kodansha (43 exist as of September 23, 2011). The series centers on the relationship between college sophomore Keiichi Morisato and the goddess Belldandy.
As the manga's popularity increased, a five-episode original video animation (OVA) was made based on it. With the OVA's success, the stage was set for two TV series and a film to follow.

It centers on a fictional police station in Sumida, Tokyo as its officers tackle everyday criminals while keeping people safe. It mixes both drama and action with some comedy and humor.
You're Under Arrest has been adapted into three television seasons, three OVA series and a live-action drama special after it had been first serialized by Kodansha's Afternoon magazine in 1987.

The official website of the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2012 is appealing to manga fans to come up with a name for its mascot.
Entrants can submit one suggestion each through an online form on the fair’s website until June 29. The winner, to be be announced in mid-July, will receive an autograph of the designer of the mascot, Kosuke Fujishima.

A 2-meter high statue of the Unit 01 is on display at the shop through June 24.
There is also a gallery of key frames and other materials used in the animation production featuring Shinji and the robot.

The Yokohama city government will launch a month-long campaign starting from June 16 to mark the release of Studio Ghibli Inc.'s "From Up On Poppy Hills" on DVD and Blu-ray disc.
The animated feature, based on a screenplay written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son, Goro, was theatrically released last year and was the highest grossing film in Japan, raking in about 4.6 billion yen ($58 million) at the box office in 2011.

The Japan Cartoonists Association has announced that it has given pirate-themed manga "One Piece" a grand prize in the Japan Cartoonist Awards.
The JCA is an organization run by manga artists in Japan. The JCA awards are different from other manga honors in Japan because winners are chosen by their fellow manga artists.
This year, "Anpanman" creator Takashi Yanase served as head of the jury committee.

J-pop singer May'n will kick off a nine-day world tour at Key Club in Los Angeles on June 21.
She will also perform on Sept. 23 at Rotunda 3 on the sixth floor of the Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Center in Hong Kong. More international dates may be added later.
The announcement of the world tour coincided with the May 9 release of her new single, "Chase the World, the opening theme song for the new "Accel World" animated TV series.

"One Piece Film Z," the latest feature film adaptation of the popular manga series by Eiichiro Oda about a group of pirates led by a young boy, will hit cinemas nationwide on Dec. 15, its official website announced.
As has been revealed, Oda serves as executive producer for the latest feature, just as he did on the previous feature, "One Piece Film: Strong World." That movie raked in 4.8 billion yen ($60 million) at the Japanese box office after it was released in December 2009.

More than 100 select films will be showcased June 15-30 at the Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia 2012, one of Asia's largest festivals dedicated to short films, in Tokyo and Yokohama, the organizer has announced.
This year, more than 4,400 works from 112 countries and regions were submitted for the festival.
The Best Short Award will be given to each work in the "International Competition," "Asia International Competition" and "Japan Competition" categories before selecting the top Grand Prix award.

Hiroyuki Okiura's animated feature "A Letter to Momo" won the main prize in the "Feature film" category at the 11th AniFest animation film festival in the Czech city of Teplice this month.
In addition, Atsushi Wada's "The Mechanism of Spring" won the main prize in the "Short film up to 5 minutes" category, with Mirai Mizue's "And And" receiving the same prize in the "Music videos" category.
