Critically acclaimed manga “A Drifting Life” by Yoshihiro Tatsumi and “Saint Young Men” by Hikaru Nakamura are two of the many Japanese titles that have been nominated for prizes at the 2012 Angouleme International Comics Festival, the event organizer announced.
The annual festival will get under way Jan. 26-29, in Angouleme, France.

This year, 58 titles have been nominated for best comic book and six other prizes.
With Japanese manga widely popular in France, titles from Japan have been selected every year.
“A Bride’s Story” by Kaoru Mori and “Takemitsu Zamurai,” written by Issei Eifuku and illustrated by Taiyo Matsumoto, were also nominated for best comic.
Many of the Japanese comics selected this year have received critical acclaim and won various manga prizes.

The festival also gives awards to comics listed for the Heritage Selection and Young Readers Selection. The Heritage Selection covers past works that should be remembered.
Of the 10 included in the selection, three are from Japan: Osamu Tezuka’s “Boku no Manga Jinsei” (My Manga Life) and Shotaro Ishinomori’s “Medicine Dealer Kuzuryu” and “The Way of Ryu.”
With Ishinomori’s “Sabu and Ichi’s Detective Stories” also listed last year, it appears that the late manga giant is gaining increasing recognition in France, although he had been less widely known than Tezuka.

Meanwhile, Kanata Konami’s “Chi’s Sweet Home” was nominated in the Young Readers Selection. The title has also become a best-selling manga in North America. “Crime School T1: La Rentree des Crasses,” illustrated by Hiroyuki Oshima, a Japanese artist based in France, has also been listed in the same division.
Atsushi Kaneko’s “SOIL” has been selected for the Selection Polar division for crime comics. In Japan, the mystery manga ran in Comic Beam monthly magazine.
