Ueda's 'Ocean Chronicles' wins Nihon SF Taisho Award

Author Sayuri Ueda won the 32nd Nihon SF Taishō Award for her epic science-fiction novel Karyu no Miya (The Ocean Chronicles) on Sunday. The other nominees were the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime, Kōji Mishima's Dynamic Figure novel, Hideaki Sena's Kibō (Hope) short story collection, and Junya Yokota's non-fiction Gendai Nihon Kisō Shōsetsu Shi Meiji-Hen (A History of Modern Japanese Fantasy Novels: Meiji Period).

With this award, SFWJ honors the best work in the fields of science fiction and fantasy — regardless of medium — that was released between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011. The selection committee included Tow Ubukata, Yūsuke Kishi, Aritsune Toyoda, Akira Hori, and Miyuki Miyabe.

Previous winners have included Project Itoh's Harmony novel, the Denno Coil anime series, Moto Hagio's Barbara Ikai manga, Mamoru Oshii's Innocence anime film, Ubukata's original Mardock Scramble novels, Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, Shusuke Kaneko's Gamera 2 film, and Katsuhiro Otomo's Domu manga. The late Guin Saga author Kaoru Kurimoto and the late author/anime "science-fiction researcher" Takumi Shibano also received special awards.
