Anime & Manga Japan / 'Happiness' Station gets 2 mascot goddesses

旧幸福駅

Even though no train has stopped at the old Kofuku (happiness) Station on the now-defunct Hiroo Line in 25 years, two new mascot "station goddessess" characters have been designated to welcome fans.
The station, in Obihiro, Hokkaido, has continued to attract visitors who hope for some luck from the happy name, even after the railway line ended operations in 1987.
To further promote the ever-popular station, the mascots Miyuki and Megumi were introduced on June 22 at its official website.

(Megumi / めぐみ)

Hokkaido-native illustrator Mikeou was asked to design the characters to celebrate next year's 40th anniversary from when the station became widely known across Japan in 1973. The station was featured in a Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK)'s travel documentary that year.
The Hiroo Line had been well-known among travelers because in addition to Kofuku Station, there was also the Aikoku (country of love) Station on the route.
After the show was aired, tickets printed with the phrase "From Aikoku to Kofuku" became a hot souvenir item and sold very well.
The old Kofuku Station building was scheduled to be scrapped when the Hiroo Line went out of business in 1987. But the city decided to preserve the facility because it continued to attract visitors years after it became an iconic spot.

(Miyuki / みゆき)

Miyuki is a newly appointed station goddess in charge of the Kofuku Station and its surrounding area. She can be too discreet at times, but is also strong-willed. She wishes happiness for visitors with her singing and healing powers.
Megumi is in charge of the Aikoku Station and its surrounding area. Sociable and active, the goddess loves to connect people and is good at love fortune-telling.
The two mascots are promoting the Kofuku Station through the station's official blog. Related items will be available in a souvenir shop at the station from mid-July.
