What is Manga?
Sep 20, 2009 by Sequential Tart News

"Manga" is the Japanese word for "comic book" (and "manhwa" is Korean). As far as I'm aware the Japanese refer to American comic books as "comics" not as "manga" (or "manhwa" for Koreans). Creating something in "manga-style" is a misnomer that companies and creators have latched onto for marketing! The word manga sells — whether it has anything to do with actual manga or not! Manga doesn't have one style. It's as varied as any other medium, including our own American comics. Not all manga has big eyes, or the same pacing, or the same art style, etc., just as not all American comics have superheroes, large-breasted women, and male-dominated storylines. The big eyes and cartoonish face may be a generality that set it apart (especially in the 90s when anime/manga hit the US hard), but it does not define it.  ...
