ANIME NEWS: 'Bakugan' is back, bigger and better, to conquer invaders
Mar 9, 2010 by Asahi

"Bakugan," an action adventure fantasy anime television series, was originally broadcast in Japan in 2007. It is now a global phenomenon, viewed in 110 countries. Toys, games and other offshoots are helping to ensure further success.

After a two-year hiatus, the latest series "Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia," is being aired on TV Tokyo and its affiliates on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

In "Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia," the boy hero Dan fights alongside the Drago monster called Bakugan, a creature who was created from a card, to protect the world they live in.

Although peace was restored in the previous series, their world is once again being invaded by the Vestals, an enemy from another dimension.

It is time for Dan and Drago to gird for battle once again.

The new series premiered on March 2, along with a special portion featuring guest comedy duo Hannya.

During the special, guests played an interactive combat game version of "Bakugan" that uses action figures and cards. As they played, they offered hints from the anime series and the game on how to win the "Bakugan" game.

"Bakugan" toy figures hit the market last Dec. 30. The company also has a tie-in with the comics magazine "Koro Koro" (Shogakukan). Thus, "Bakugan" is a multimedia project involving TV, toys and comics.

In addition, "Bakugan" characters appeared in January at the Next Generation World Hobby Fair Winter 2010, to demonstrate their multimedia experience. They will also appear at the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2010 that starts March 25 at Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center in Odaiba, followed by other events nationwide.

When the "Bakugan" project started in 2007 in Japan, the anime broadcasts were not shown simultaneously with the start of toy sales, so satisfactory results were not achieved.

However, after the series was shown in Canada, the popularity of "Bakugan" soared. It was then shown in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.

Now, children worldwide are fans of the show and the related toys from Japan. In 2009, "Bakugan" won the Toy of the Year Award at the U.S. Toy Fair. Earlier this year, it won the Boys Toy of the Year for the second year in a row.

Bakugan toy sales are setting records, which is attracting more attention.

The latest series, "Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia," owes its existence to this worldwide popularity.

Five companie of the Sega Sammy Group--Sega Toys, Sega, Sammy, Sammy NetWorks and TMS Entertainment--have formed the Bakugan Limited Liability Partnership. These companies will collaborate to market "Bakugan" in each of their areas of expertise.
