Museum to honor 'Doraemon' artist

The Fujiko F. Fujio Museum will display selected works from 50,000 of his original drawings under its management, according to Fujiko Pro Co.
Fujiko, whose real name was Hiroshi Fujimoto, lived near Ikuta Ryokuchi park, where the museum will be located, until he died in 1996 at 62. 
A museum devoted to manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator of the robotic cat Doraemon and other popular characters, will open in Kawasaki in September 2011. ...

Bandai introduces augmented reality app for interactive card game

Bandai Co. has launched a campaign for its Data Carddas collectible card game "Data Carddas Supersentai Battle: Dice-O" featuring augmented reality (AR) technology.
When iPhone users who install a special reader application scan a game card with their phones, animated combat scenes and TV commercials can be viewed on the iPhone screen.
The iPhone application can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

Japan's first major live action 3-D film, "Senritsu Meikyu 3D" (The Shock Labyrinth) is making big waves.
The news comes amid rising interest worldwide in 3-D movie-making and, in particular, this film's cutting-edge experimental features.
Ripples have spread as far afield as Taiwan. Over its opening weekend there on March 20-21, "The Shock Labyrinth" came in second at the box-office only to Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland."

A festival of independent animation films from South Korea comes to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya this month.
The Korean Independent Animation Film Festival will focus on South Korea's growing animation scene. It's the third year for the event, which was previously called "Link Into Animated Korea."
In addition to screenings of the latest Korean anime films, the agenda includes discussions and workshops.

The Tokyo metropolitan government has produced an anime for promoting tourist spots in the city.
The short film, "Honey Tokyo," revolves around a girl named Honey who is sent from the future in search of "pieces of happiness."
She steals away people's happiness and wipes away Tokyo's charms.
A youth named Takeru takes her out on a tour of Tokyo that is intended for her to experience joy and wonder. She eventually has a change of heart.
The story features various Tokyo spots, including the Akihabara, Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku and Roppongi districts. ...

Time has caught up with the world's most-beloved boy robot.
Tetsuwan Atom, the popular character created in the early 1950s by the late manga artist Osamu Tezuka, "attended" the entrance ceremony of an elementary school in Tokyo's Takadanobaba district on Tuesday.
Tezuka, who died in 1989, cast Atom as having been created "at the science ministry in Takadanobaba on April 7, 2003." This would make the character 7 years old today and ready to start elementary school. ...
