The Graduate School of Film and New Media of the Tokyo University of the Arts won recognition as the Best Animation School at the 20th Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films, held June 1-6 in Zagreb, Croatia.

The event ranks among the world's top four animation filmfests, together with those held in Annecy, France; Ottawa, Canada; and Hiroshima, Japan.

The prize was the first announced during the awarding ceremony June 6. Masaki Fujihata, professor of the Graduate School of Film and New Media, and Koji Yamamura, an animation creator awarded a grand prize at Zagreb in the past, together accepted the honor. ...

The 57th volume of "One Piece" topped the list of best-selling manga comic books sold in Japan between Nov. 23, 2009, and May 23, 2010, entertainment data tracker Oricon Inc. reported June 3.

The latest offering in the popular series posted sales of about 2.306 million copies, according to the Oricon survey. The comic, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda and published by Shueisha Inc., hit store shelves in March.

The 56th volume of the pirate manga, released in December 2009, ranked second with sales of about 2.276 million copies. ...

"Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance" has sold 357,000 copies in its first five days of release on Blu-ray disc (BD)--beating out "Michael Jackson's This Is It" for the most sales.

The animated feature film was released by King Record Co. on May 26. It sold 357,000 copies to top the June 7 Oricon BD weekly ranking, which is based on data collected between May 24 and May 30 and announced June 2.

It posted the highest sales on record in both Oricon's weekly ranking and BD sales. In only the first week of release, it eclipsed "Michael Jackson's This Is It," which previously marked the highest BD sales at 351,000 copies. ...

ANIME NEWS: 'Mutant Girls Squad' to be seen in 10 countries

Touted as "the most extreme idols in the history of Japanese movies," "Mutant Girls Squad--The Legend of the Bloody Iron Mask" opened May 22 at Theater N Shibuya in Tokyo. Attracting attention at home and abroad, this action-packed splatter-horror film will soon be released in theaters in 10 countries outside Japan.

The filmmakers received inquiries about foreign distribution while shooting was under way. Even before the movie was released in Japan, it was set to be shown in seven other countries. The movie gained further attention after its domestic release, and three more countries joined the list. ...
