Anime Cine Experience event a first for India's anime fans

Anime Cine Experience, the first major event aimed at introducing Japanese anime and manga to India, was held Aug. 20-22 in New Delhi, the country's largest metropolis.
The event was put together by local film club Cinedarbaar, the Embassy of Japan, the Japan Foundation, India's Directorate of Film Festivals and a local Japanese association.

The event, which took place at a multicultural facility called Siri Fort Auditorium II, was one of the largest in the region to feature Japanese anime, manga and pop culture.
In addition to film screenings, discussions and workshops were offered. Manga comics and gaming consoles were on display in one section, where visitors could enjoy the hands-on experience.

Many of the anime screened have been introduced overseas on other occasions. Films included Mamoru Hosoda's "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," Isao Takahata's "Grave of the Fireflies" and Makoto Shinkai's "5 Centimeters Per Second."
A film adaptation of the TV anime series "Chibi Maruko-chan" was also included.

Moreover, a local expert on Japanese anime and games gave a lecture, while a workshop on animation was offered. To analyze Japanese anime from various perspectives, topics covered at the workshop included animation in and outside Japan, 3-D and 2-D animation and an overview of the industry.

Indian Auteur, the Cinedarbaar-related online film journal, is releasing a special feature on Japanese animation with the help of the Japan Foundation. The articles will cover anime directors such as Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Oshii and Makoto Shinkai.

Indian Auteur is the only online journal specializing in films from India and other countries.
An English-language printed version of the journal's special feature on Japanese anime is to be distributed to cultural and educational institutions across India, which will pave the way for wider research on Japanese anime in the country.

India is the world's second-most populous country, and Japanese anime is gaining exposure through TV and other media. But few cultural exchanges related to anime and manga have been held, and India had previously not been considered a possible market by the Japanese industry.
Anime Cine Experience appears likely to spur the expansion of interest in anime and manga in India.
