Feature film "Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society 3D" and the animated TV series "Hipira" were honored at the first International 3D Awards Lumiere Japan organized by, the Japan Committee of the International 3D Society (I3DS).
The awards, announced late last month, are meant to recognize outstanding content using stereoscopic 3-D technology in 12 categories such as film, television and advertising. The Japanese committee, which was also established this year, took part in the selection process with I3DS member companies and industry professionals.

The winner in the feature film category, "Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society 3D" was picked from among all the theatrically released films, symbolizing the importance of 3-D expressions in animation.
In a departure from live-action 3-D films, the production team intentionally played down the stereoscopic images rendered in the traditional two-dimensional animation style to enhance the 3-D experience with the portrayals of cyberspace.
Director Kenji Kamiyama is currently working on "009 Re: Cyborg," a 3-D CG feature film adaptation of the popular "Cyborg 009" manga series also rendered in the classic cell animation style.

The production staff of "Hipira," which took home the award in the television animation category, also took up the challenge to produce the 3-D anime with the look and feel of traditional animation. The anime is based on a children's book of the same name written by Katsuhiro Otomo. A theater ad for the "Final Fantasy XIII" video game won the award in the cinema advertising category.
The I3DS Japan Committee was established to develop and promote 3-D technology. The committee aims to further encourage the 3-D movement that has been gaining momentum since last year.
Member companies include electronics makers such as Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp., the Digital Content Association of Japan, broadcasters and production and post-production companies. Many anime-related companies, including Anima Inc., A-1 Pictures Inc., Tezuka Productions Co., Bandai Visual Co. and Production I.G are also members of the committee.
